The Holy Ashura was observed in Chittagong and its adjacent areas on Tuesday with due solemnity, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).
On this day, 10th of Muharram in the Hijri year 61, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), along with his family members and close relatives, were entrapped by Yazid’s forces and later embraced martyrdom in Karbala after battling for hours.
About 1332 years ago, Imam Hussain (RA) had to make supreme sacrifice to uphold the spirit of Islam and the teachings of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).
The day is a symbol of sacrifice to uphold the spirit of truth and justice in the eye of Islam.
In observance of the day, the Shi’a Muslims brought out a procession known as ‘Tazia’ from Andarkilla area in the port city.
People participating in the Tazia processions chanted “Hai Hussain, Hai Hussain.” The procession paraded different thoroughfares of the port city.
In the procession, the Shi’a Muslims expressed mourning and grief by flagellating themselves on the back with chains, beating their heads intending to connect them with Imam Hussain’s (RA) sufferings.
Other programmes of the day included Quran Khwani, Milad Mahfil, fasting and feeding the destitute.
