Holistic approach to prevent AIDS spread underscored

Instead of sporadic efforts, holistic approach has become an urgent need for more public awareness about the prevailing risks of HIV/AIDS for its successful prevention, speakers at a meeting observed here yesterday.
They viewed collective efforts of all quarters especially the community people together with the law enforcing agencies, narcotics and drug control department and all other gatekeepers is very important to prevent anymore infection of the deadly virus.
The observations came at a district level meeting on HIV/AIDS and its risks related preventive activities held at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner.
Dhaka Ahsania Mission and Association for Community Development (ACD) jointly organized the meeting in association with Save the Children and Global Fund. Main thrust of the meeting was to strengthening coordination among all the government and non-government organisations concerned to expedite the HIV/AIDS prevention activities in the region.
Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury addressed the discussion as chief guest while Assistant Director of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital Dr Sirajul Karim and Chief Health Officer of Rajshahi City Corporation Dr AFM Anjuman Ara Begum spoke as special guests with Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Farhana Haque in the chair.
During his keynote presentation, SSM Hizbullah, Project Manager of Save the Children, gave an overview of the country’s HIV/AIDS situation and government interventions to its prevention.
Deputy Director of Department of Youth Development Matiur Rahman, ACD Project Coordinators Ehsanul Amin and Nahid Sultana and Assistant Director of Dhaka Ahsania Mission Iqbal Mahmud also spoke.
Chief Guest Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury said HIV/AIDS is not only health issue but also social development concern. He stressed the need for more coordination among different organizations and stakeholders to attain cherished results.
He added that only the government or any single organisation isn’t capable to resist the HIV/AIDS infection as its risk and vulnerability is gradually being increased due to various reasons.
Dr Sirajul Karim mentioned that the main challenge to prevent the HIV/AIDS is now being adjudged as the stigma and negative attitude towards the vulnerable population like injecting drug users, sex workers and professional blood donors. He, however, emphasized the need for protecting the infected persons from their human rights violations as they are also the integral part of the society.
Universal access is a commitment to scale up access to HIV treatment, prevention, care and support with the support from government development partners and civil society, he added.
