Staff Reporter :Adarsha Dhaka Andolan, the pro-BNP professionals’ platform, has demanded fresh elections in all tree city corporations, canceling the April 28 polls. It also demanded resignation of the current Election Commission (EC) for its biased role.Leaders of the platform made the demand at a press conference in the National Press Club in the city on Wednesday afternoon. They said that the April 28 polls were nothing but fiesta of vote rigging.”This election was made a rubbish and garbage centre by the government, EC, law enforcers and the ruling party men. We want fresh election and resignation of EC,” said Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, convener of the platform. Addressing the press conference, the former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University also said that it had been proved again that any election under the current EC and the government was impossible. “If the city polls were held neutrally, fair Parliamentary election under the incumbent government would have been possible. But now it would be a wrong decision to take part in any election under the present government,” he said. He further said that Tuesday’s election was not an election. It was a mockery of democracy. It was a farce with the people. Mentioning of the elections from 1946 to 2014, he said that he had never seen such ‘hated and farcical’ election in his long eyes. The election is worse than the January-5 one-sided election. “We are ashamed for such polls. The whole nation is astonished. We are worried about the future of the country’s democracy,” he said.Responding to a question, he rejected the allegation of earlier telephonic conversation about boycotting the city polls. “We took part in the election with the target of victory. We were compelled to boycott the election in view of vote robbery and irregularities,” he said. Journalist leader and member-secretary of the Adarsha Dhaka Andolan Shaukat Mahmud read out a written statement at the press conference. Former DU Pro-VC Prof Dr AFM Yusuf Haider, DU Professor Dr Mahbub Ullah and journalist Mahfuz Ullah also attended the press conference.
