The High Court (HC) on Wednesday directed the Dhaka University (DU) administration to hold Dhaka University Central Student’s Union (DUCSU) election at a suitable time, preferably within six months.
The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order upon a writ petition filed by 25 DU students.
The students on March 21 in 2012 filed the petition seeking directives from the HC for holding the DUCSU election.
After primary hearing on the petition, the HC issued a rule on DUCSU election on April 8 in 2012. The court completed the hearing on the rule on Tuesday.
Advocate Manzill Murshid appeared for the petitioners in the court while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the DU. Mahbubey Alam said in the hearing, “Preferable time is important for holding an election which should be held in a favorable environment. Now, Registered Graduate Election process of DU is going on.”
Advocate Manzill Murshid said, “Elected representatives of the DUCSU will work for students’ education, sports and cultural expansion according to the Dhaka University order. But there is no elected representative in DUCSU since 1991 which is hampering the overall expansion of talent of the students of the university. According to the order, a representative of DUCSU will be in the Senate of the university. Functions of the Senate also suffer as there is no representative of DUCSU.” The last election took place 27 years ago on June 6, 1990. Student organisations, especially the left leaning ones, have demanded the polls on numerous occasions.
