About 30-40 hizras (third gender) created a chaotic situation in judicial magistrate court premises in Nilphamari on Sunday demanding release of their three colleagues arrested for attacking police while launching drive against smuggling in an intercity train in Saidpur rail station on 10 June.
They started crying at loud voice, hit their own chests and shouted in a body protesting what they said the injustice on them by general railway police (GRP). They also staged sit in front of superintendent of police office in the district town.[
Police and local sources informed that on 10 June at about 12.30 pm, a GRP team led by additional police super Lalon Ahmed raided the intercity train Titumir express came from Rajshahi at Saidpur rail station as part of their drive against smuggling prior to Eid-ul-fitr.
During the raid, GRP recovered huge quantity of Indian Jira (a kind of spice used for cooking) from the possession of some hizras in train’s compartment.
This made the hizras furious and they attacked police; bit them with teeth, made marks with nails on their body (of police) and so on making four cop members injured
GRP also arrested three hizras named Chonia (28), Fulki (30) and Billal (35) from the spot on charge of attacking police. The arrestees were produced before the court today and their lawyer sought bail for them.
But the court rejected their prayer and sent them to jail.
At this, the hizras started crying and shouting showing sympathy for their arrested colleagues creating a chaotic situation that attracted huge crowd.
To tackle the situation, a police team from Sador police station reached the spot and managed to make the hizras calm.
Police also dispersed the curious crowd gathered to see their activities.
Advocate Obaidur Rahman, lawyer for the hizras said that the case was transferred to higher court for seeking their bail on next Tuesday.
Hizra Anguri, claiming herself as the leader of her community complained to journalists that they were severely tortured by GRP though they didn’t commit any crime.
Shahjahan Pasha, officer in charge of sador police station said that the hizras peacefully left the court premises and the situation is under control.
