Sylhet Correspondent :
The prices of Hilsa fishes have abnormally gone up at different markets in the sylhet city ahead of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year. Cashing in on the high demand of the fish over the celebration of the largest festival of Bengali nation, a section of unscrupulous traders has increased the prices of Hilsa fishes and is realizing extra money from the buyers. Hilsa is locally known as ‘king of fishes’. It is an age-old tradition to have the fish with soaked rice on this day.
Besides, many Hilsa traders are selling frozen and Burmese Hilsa saying these are of Padma River to get high prices. Conse-quently, general people are being cheated after purchasing the fishes at high prices on the eve of the Pahela Baishakh.
During a visit to different kitchen markets in sylhet city area this correspondent has found huge quantities of Hilsa fishes of various sizes. The rush of buyers was also visible but they complained about the abnormal price hike.
Seeking anonymity, a Hilsa trader told “Most of the Hilsa fishes were brought from abroad especially from Myanmar as the government had imposed a restriction on Hilsa fishing at different places across the country for the last few days. Many unscrupulous traders are now selling the Burmese Hilsa in the name of Padma and Barisal’s Hilsa. They are taking the advantage due to high demand of Hilsa fishes in the markets for the upcoming Pahela Baishakh. The prices may increase more in the next days.”
