At the peak the season large size hilsa flooded local markets of Barishal making price level lower.
Hilsa traders demanded export facility to save the netted fish from becoming rotten as there is no system for preserving this perishable item here and they do not getting the satisfactory price.
Fishery officials believe that the increase of production of hilsa is the result of regular monitoring and intensive care against illegal jatka (below than 11 inches hilsa fries) netting.
After visiting Barishal Port Road hilsa mokam(wholesale market), which is the biggest wholesale market of hilsa trading in Barishal division, it was found that around 2500 to 3000 mound hilsa supplied at the market with average weight of 900 to 1500 grams.
Nirab Hossain Tutul, president of` Barisal Matsya Aratdar Samitee said average 3,000 mounds of hilsa are coming to the market every day.
It is difficult to consume such a large number of hilsa in the domestic market. There is no capability to preserve the fish and at least some large hilsa should be allowed to be exported, so that fishermen and traders could get fair prices.
According to the Barishal Hilsa Mokam sources over one kilogram(1100 gram-1500 gram) hilsa priced Tk. 1000 -1200, from 600 gram to 900gram Tk. 800 and below 500 gram is selling at Tk 300 per kilogram.
This price is thirty percent less than that of August 2019, said Shahalam, one of the hilsa traders.
We netted hilsa boarding on `Ma-2′ fishing trawler and caught 130 mound hilsa fishes from southern bay. Most of those were over one kilogram, and some were even over 1500 to 2000 gram, told Kabir Majhi of Bhola.
But reaching at the mokam we found that but price of big hilsa is lower than our expectation and so we deprived from getting fair price, he told.
Hilsa trader Ajit Kumar Das said that the supply of fish has suddenly increased 3/4 times in recent days. Earlier there were 800/1000 mound of hilsa supplied daily at the mokam, but now that reached 2500 to 3000 mound in recent days.
The price is going down and fish is rotting as there is no cold-storage to preserve hilsa. Fishermen and traders will get a fair price if they are permitted to export hilsa, he added.
Azizul Haque, divisional director of fisheries, said that hilsa productions are increasing every year due to the implementation of hilsa protection programme of the government.
Last year in Barishal division total 3 .29lakhs ton hilsa produced and 5.17 lakhs ton hilsa produced in the country, he added.
Dr. Bimal Chandra Das, district fisheries officer (Hilsa), Barishal, said this year hilsa production may be increased 10-20 percent in Barishal region.
