Heavy taxation on tobacco products demanded in Rangpur

Speakers at a regional meeting here Thursday demanded heavy taxation on all tobacco products to discourage consumption of tobacco products those cause every sixth adult death in the country.
They were addressing the meeting of Rangpur regional unit of Anti Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA) organised by Association for Community Development (ACD) at its office with assistance of Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and ‘PROGGA.’
Senior journalist and ATMA member Joynal Abedin presided over the meeting participated by ATMA members, journalists of the print, electronic and online media from all over Rangpur division.
Programme Officer of ACD Hosne Ara Parveen Farzana delivered welcome speech narrating the goals and objectives of the meeting being arranged before observing the World Tobacco Free Day-2014 on May 31 next.
Senior journalists and ATMA members Mahbubul Islam, Rafikul Islam, Mamun Islam, Liakat Ali Badal, Moinul Islam and Asaduzzaman Afzal from Rangpur, Kashiram Kumar Das from Dinajpur, ABS Litan and Harun Ar Rashid from Gaibandha addressed.
The speakers said 60,000 people are dying in Bangladesh consuming tobacco products and many more suffering from lung cancer, cerebra-vascular, coronary artery, chronic obstructive pulmonary and other tobacco-attributable diseases.
Besides, tobacco use has become a grievous concern for the nation as seven percent of the younger generations, aged between 13 and 15 years, have been consuming tobacco products and the trend has been increasing consistently, they said. Besides, the nation spends over Taka 51 billion annually in treating patients suffering from tobacco-related diseases in Bangladesh, one of the largest tobacco consuming countries, putting huge pressure on the national economy and productivity, they said.
