The unremitting heavy rainfall for last two consecutive days caused a serious disruption to civic life, port and businesses activities in the city.
The incessant heavy shower forced Shah Amanat International Airport delay in operations of a few flights as its runway went underwater for a few hours, airport sources said. Sufferings of the city residents know no bounds when bulk of the city areas went under knee to waist down water for unprecedented and unrelieved heavy downpour throughout the day.
The heavy downpour which began Thursday night and continued till filling this report caused huge water logging and inundation of the dwelling houses of the low lying areas.
There was serious dislocation in normal public life, port activities as well as all sorts of business activities due to incessant rain that triggered heavy water logging in most parts of the city.
The loading and unloading of bulk-cargoes ships at the outer anchorage at the port was hampered owing to heavy rain while operational activities in container handling also affected, port sources said.
Patenga Meteorological office recorded 218 millimeters of rainfall in last 24 hours ending at 12 noon. today.
The Met office forecast further said heavy to very heavy rainfall in next twenty-four hours in Chittagong region.
Heavy rainfall created water logging in many areas including Lalkhan Bazar, Pahartali, Bahaddarhat, Muradpur, Chandgaon, Shulakbahar, Bakalia, Patharghata, Asadganj, Korbaniganj, Chaktai, Nasirabad, Patantuli, Madarbari, Agrbad, Halishahar causing immense suffering to the people living in those localities.
Witnesses said that many areas went under knee-deep water during the rainfall and residences and business establishments in some low laying areas were submerged by rainwater.
Transport problems in the heavy shower caused untold sufferings to the commuters.
Rickshaw pullers and three wheelers were seen demanding excess fare from the commuters taking advantages of the bad weather and thin traffic.
Meanwhile, congestion of vehicles in some important city streets including Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, Agrabad, Halishahar and Sholoshahar was seen as the heavy onrush of rainwater in those streets forced large number of mechanized and non-mechanized vehicles remained stationery that increased suffering of the commuters manifolds.
