Court Correspondent :
The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Wednesday deferred the hearing on whether to take Khaleda Zia’s comments about the number of martyrs on the War of Independence in cognizance in a sedition case lodged against her. The new date is July 12.
Judge Quamrul Hossain Mollah of the court passed the order upon a petition filed by Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Advocate Sanaullah Miah seeking time as his client was not able to appear in the court yesterday due to her illness.
Earlier on January 25, Supreme Court
lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka. On December 21 last year, Khaleda Zia at a discussion meeting held in the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh raised question about the number of Liberation War martyrs.
“There’re controversies as to how many were martyred during the war of independence. There are many books and documents questioning the actual numbers of martyrs,” she said.
