The High Court (HC) on Sunday set October 29 to hold hearing on a plea seeking its directions to evict 30 illegal structures raised along Turag riverbank on both sides of Kamarpara Bridge in Tongi.
The court set the date as rights group Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed the petition after producing a report of judicial probe over the matter.
“The report was produced before the High Court division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah, and the court set October 29 to hold hearing on our plea for its directives to knock down the illegal structures from the riverbank,” said HRPB counsel Manzil Morshed.
The rights body filed a writ in this regard last year, drawing attention to the court about a newspaper report narrating the indiscriminate occupation on the riverbank at different points.
The High Court on November 9, 2016, had ordered to stop land filling of Turag river and raising of illegal structures on its bank within 48 hours.
The court also had asked to file a report on execution of the order.
But as the report was found incorrect, the court on January 5 passed another order, asking for judicial probe to identify whether the illegal structures have really been evicted and whether there are anymore illegal structures standing on the riverbank.
