Hearing on appeal of Mujahid today

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will hear the state’s arguments on Wednesday on the verdict pronounced by ICT-2 sentencing Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
A four-member Appellate Bench, headed by
Justice SK Sinha, on Tuesday fixed the date after closing the presentation of the judgment that began on April 29 this year.
The other members of the SC bench are Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foyez Siddique. On Tuesday, Mujahid’s counsel Khandker Mahbub Hossain gave a statement on behalf of the convicted.
After the completion of Mahbub’s argument, when Attorney General Mahbubey Alam started the argument for the state, the bench adjourned the hearing till Wednesday.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on July 17, 2013, awarded Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid the death penalty for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, in collaboration with the Pakistani occupation forces, after finding the Al Badar boss guilty in five out of seven charges.
The charges included murder of intellectuals, genocide, abduction and persecution.
On August 11, 2013, condemned prisoner Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid filed an appeal with the Appellate Division against his capital punishment in the case for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Mujahid, now 66, was held responsible for abduction and murder of intellectuals, including noted journalist of the daily Ittefaq Sirajuddin Hossain and other cultural personalities like composer Altaf Mahmud and illustrious teachers like Muneir Chowdhury and murder and torture of minority community Hindus in Faridpur district.
