Hearing on 16th Amendment adjourned

Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Sunday adjourned the 8th day’s hearing on the appeal filed on behalf of the Government against a High Court verdict that scrapped the 16th Amendment of the Constitution till Monday. He was presiding over the seven-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
On Sunday amicus curiae Barrister M Amirul Islam completed his 250 pages submission opposing the prosecution move against the High Court verdict on the 16th amendment. Another amicus curiale Senior Advocate MI Farooqui started his 23-page submission when he mentioned about Articles 7,8 and 96 of the constitution, 8th amendment, democracy and judicial independence and supreme judicial council. The eminent lawyer is expected to conclude his submission on Monday.
The 16th amendment had empowered the Parliament to remove the Supreme Court judges for their incapacity or misbehaviour.
