A Dhaka court has refixed August 3 for the next hearing on Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases filed against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and five others.
Judge Abu Ahmed Zamader of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-3, set up on the premises of Alia Madrasa in city’s Bakshibazar, passed the order on Thursday.
The court fixed the date in response to a time petition filed by Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain and after the hearing of partial statement of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Harun-or-Rashid, who is the plaintiff of Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
On Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, Khaleda Zia’s lawyers appealed for the time petition. The lawyers also cross-examined Harun-or-Rashid in the cases. Khandker Mahbub Hossain cross-examined the ACC official for one and half an hour.
Khaleda Zia appeared in the makeshift courtroom in the morning. Most of the accused, who were on bail, also appeared there. The security was beefed up at the makeshift court.

On August 8 in 2011, the ACC filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources. The other accused in the case are Harris Chowdhury, Ziaul Islam Munna, assistant private secretary (APS) to Harris, and Monirul Islam Khan, APS to Sadeque Hossain Khoka, former mayor of the erstwhile Dhaka City Corporation.
Harun-or-Rashid, also an investigation officer of the case, pressed charges against Khaleda Zia and others on January 16 in 2012.
Besides, the ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3 in 2008 with Ramna Police Station accusing Khaleda Zia, her eldest son Tarique Rahman, now living in the UK, and four others for misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore which came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
