HC upholds 13 years jail to BNP leader Mir Nasiruddin

The High Court on Tuesday upheld a trial court verdict that sentenced former State minister and BNP leader Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin to 13 years in jail for amassing wealth by illegal means and his son Mir Mohammad Helaluddin to three years in jail as he was found guilty of abetting his father in raking in illegal wealth.
They have been asked to surrender in the trial court within three months after getting the certified copy of the High Court order.
The High Court bench of Justice AKM Abdul Hakim and Justice Fatema Najib delivered the verdict after hearing an appeal against the trial court verdict.
Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin was present in the court yesterday during announcement of the verdict.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on March 6, 2007 with the Gulshan Police Station against Mir Nasiruddin and his son on charge of illegally accumulating huge wealth and concealing information of wealth worth Tk 67.26 million in the report he had submitted to the commission.
A Dhaka court on July 4, 2007, sentenced former State Minister Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin to 13 years in jail for amassing wealth by illegal means. And the BNP leader’s son Mir Mohammad Helaluddin was sentenced to three years in prison, as he was found guilty of abetting his father in raking in illegal wealth.
Judge Amar Kumar Roy of the Special Judge’s Court-2 set up in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban also fined Mir Nasir Tk 50 lakh. He will have to serve another two years in jail failing to pay the fine. His son has to pay Tk 1 lakh in fine or serve one more month in jail if fails to pay the fine.
They filed appeal in two separate petitions with the High Court against the trial court verdict. The High Court on August 10, 2010, scrapped the conviction against Mir Nasir and on August 2, 2010, scrapped the conviction against Mir Helal.
The ACC filed appeal petitions against the High Court verdicts. The Appellate Division on July 3, 2014, cancelled the High Court verdicts and at the same time asked the High Court bench of Justice AKM Abdul Hakim and Justice Fatema Najib to rehear the case.
Following the Appellate Division’s order, the High Court held rehearing on the case and delivered the judgement yesterday. Advocate Md Asaduzzaman appeared for Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin and his son, while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the ACC.
