The High Court has once again summoned a police officer to hear explanations over his inaction against a Farmers Bank director who was caught at the Dhaka airport last year for carrying a loaded pistol.
In an order passed on Tuesday, Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim summoned Bidhan Chandra Tripura, the then deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and now an SP in Habiganj, to appear in court on Feb 13.
Bidhan did not show up in court despite a court order issued on Dec 12, 2017, said Deputy Attorney General Farhad Ahmad.
Two other officials-Dhaka airport OC Nur-e-Azam Mia and Sub-Inspector Sukanta Saha – were also summoned. Both complied with the order, the state counsel said.
Azmat Rahman, a director of Farmers Bank and managing director of garment maker Azmat Group of Industries, was allowed to go home after a verbal order by Bidhan.
The court told defendants’ lawyer Yusuf Hossain Humayun: “Go through the Arms Act. How did they set the suspect free without the court’s interpretation?”
On Feb 15 last year, Azmat was briefly arrested for possessing a loaded gun in the restricted zone of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and later freed, according to media reports.
The High Court issued a rule on Dec 12 after Deputy Attorney General Farhad Ahmad brought the news to the court’s attention.
The judges asked Nur-e-Azam Mia, Sukanta Saha and Bidhan Tripura to appear in court and explain why Azmat was not produced despite a general diary filed against him.
