UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Tuesday started hearing the bail petition of Awami League MP Abdur Rahman Bodi in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for accumulating wealth beyond the known sources.
After the day’s proceedings, an HC bench of Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Haque and Justice Akram Hossain Chowdhury deferred the hearing until Wednesday.
Former Law Minister Abdul Matin Khasru appeared for Bodi.
On Wednesday, the ACC lawyer is set to place his arguments against the bail petition.
Earlier on October 12, a Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka sent Abdur Rahman Bodi, MP from Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency, to jail in the case rejecting his bail petition when he surrendered before the court.
On October 16, a Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court also denied bail to Bodi after hearing a petition filed by defence counsel challenging the bail rejection by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the ACC filed a petition seeking a 10-day remand for Bodi in the case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ataul Haque fixed October 26 for hearing the petition after ACC deputy director Manjur Morshed filed the plea.
On August 21, the ACC filed the case with Ramna Police Station accusing MP Bodi (Cox’s Bazar-4) of amassing wealth illegally.
As per the FIR, Bodi submitted his wealth statement to the ACC on February 23 mentioning his and his family’s wealth worth about Tk 5.2 crore.
Examining his income tax return, the ACC probe found that he acquired over Tk 16.07 crore in last five years (2009-13) and earned illegal wealth worth nearly Tk 11 crore.
Bodi in his wealth report also mentioned an additional amount of nearly Tk 2 crore showing a higher price of his sold assets to make it legal.
