Staff Reporter :
The High Court on Wednesday ordered the authorities of the Jashore Juvenile Correction Centre to submit a report in the High Court within three months as to whether the organization was maintaining Child Welfare Board’s minimum standard.
The court also asked the organization to state the
update of the incident of the three teenagers who were allegedly tortured to death by several staffers and senior inmates on August 13 last.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed in this regard.
Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers’ Association (BNWLA) filed the petition on October 20 this year seeking High Court direction upon the organization to allow Advocate Salma Ali and BNWLA for visiting the correction centre so that they could monitor over the minimum standard of care in it.
The court also issued a rule asking the respondents to explain as to why the inaction of the authorities of the organization in giving permission to the petitioner to monitor the role of Child Welfare Board and to visit the three correction centers in Tongi, Konabari and Jashore for ensuring minimum standard of care for the child should not declared illegal.
Advocate Salma Ali herself, Advocate Nahid Mahtab and Advocate Rumana Haque took part in the hearing for the petitioner.
Three teenagers, Parvez Hasan Rabbi (18), Rasel alias Sujon (18), and Naeem Hossain (17), were allegedly tortured to death by several staffers and senior inmates on August 13. Fifteen others were also injured.
The injured inmates, who had also been abused, reportedly said that they, including the deceased, were tortured in two phases from noon to evening on August 13 as “punishment” for their involvement in a scuffle with the head guard of the centre.
