The High Court (HC) on Sunday issued a rule asking the Election Commission (EC) to explain within 10 days as to why it should not be directed to register Gano Sanghati Andolan as a political party.
The Bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order after hearing on a writ petition filed by Gano Sanghati Andolan’s Co-ordinator
Zonayed Saki challenging a decision of the EC that rejected an application for his party’s registration.
In the rule, the court also asked the EC to explain as to why its decision rejecting the party’s application for registration should not be declared illegal.
Gano Sanghati Andolan submitted the application with the EC on December 31 of 2017 for registering the party as a political party.
On April 8, the EC issued a notice to the Gano Sanghati Andolan saying that the party’s application had not been written in line with the Representation of People Order (RPO).
Saki later on submitted another application to the EC on April 22 this year detailing necessary information and data in line with the RPO, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, lawyer for the writ petitioner, told the reporters.
However, the election commission on June 19 further rejected the application saying that it was not written properly, the Barrister adds.
Zonayed Saki recently submitted the writ petition with the HC challenging the EC’s June 19 decision, the lawyer also said.
