High Court (HC) on Wednesday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in two weeks as to why it shall not pass order to repair dilapidated roads and footpaths in the port city of Chittagong.
A High Court Division bench comprising Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice J B M Hassan issued the rule asking LGRD Secretary, Roads Transport and Bridges Secretary, Housing and Public Works Secretary, Chittagong City Corporation Mayor, Chittagong Development Authority Chairman, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of Chittagong WASA to submit their respective explanations in two weeks. “Most of the city streets and footpaths have been damaged in the water logging caused by recent downpour and high tide.
Recently three people have been killed in a road accident caused by the poor condition of the roads. So a writ for court’s direction to repair the streets and footpaths in Chittagong,” said advocate Md Emdadul Haque.
The current monsoon makes the condition of roads in the port city Chittagong worst than any previous years. Maximum roads in the port city now became damaged due to the continuous raining in the current rainy season.
Following the appeal of Advocate Mohammad Emdadul Haque, the bench of high court issued two weeks rule against the above persons.
Advocate Mohammad Emdadul Haque who filed the appeal and also appeared before the high court at the hearing said, “Three persons were killed when a lorry fell on a CNG run auto taxi at Nimtola due to the ditches on the damaged road.
Most of the roads and alleys in the port city have become unfit for traffic due to cracks and potholes, causing sufferings to the pedestrians, commuters as well as the drivers.
It may be mentioned that three persons were killed and two other injured severely in a road accident at Nimtola area under Bondor thana in the port city at around 11 am on August 13. The ill-fated victims were identified as Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Musa (50), Mohammad Wazed Ali Babul (45) and Mohammad Jashim Sikdar (38).
 Sources said, a speedy lorry loaded with container fell on the auto as the condition of the road were worst and the wheels of the lorry fell into a ditch at around 11 am that morning on Nimtola Biswa Road. under Banadar thana in city.
