HC rejects writ on medical admission

Staff Reporter :The High Court on Monday rejected a writ petition filed seeking the scrapping of the MBBS and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) admission tests, claiming that the question papers were leaked.An HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice JN Deb Choudhury passed the order after hearing arguments from Attorney General Mahbubey Alam in the afternoon.The Attorney General said, “Now, there is no legal bar for the admission of the students who have passed in the admission tests.”Eleven persons, including the Cabinet Secretary, Law Secretary, Health Secretary and Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services were made defendants in the petition.On Sunday, the writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking its directive on the government to cancel the admission test of MBBS and BDS for the session 2015-16 for the leakage of the question papers.Meanwhile, a section of admission seekers continued to stage demonstrations on Monday demanding cancellation of the results of this year’s MBBS and BDS admission tests over alleged leak of question papers.Under the banner of ‘Students Seeking Admission in Public Medical Colleges’ when they tried to stage demonstration and form human chain in front of the National Press Club demanding fresh admission tests, police chased them out from the spot at about 11:00am.As soon as they tried to break the police bar and locked into altercation with them, police chased them out and picked up six admission seekers from the spot. On Sunday amid the allegation of question paper leakage, the results of the admission tests of MBBS and BDS were published with a pass rate of 58.4 percent. A total of 48,484 students passed the exams held on September 18.As many as 83,000 candidates took part in the medical and dental admission tests on Friday for 11,049 seats in MBBS and BDS courses.Talking to The New Nation on Monday Mohammad Abdul Azim, Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station said that the detainees had been kept in police custody right now.Being chased out by the law enforcers, the agitated admission seekers along with some guardians latter gathered in the Central Shaheed Minar area.The agitating students alleged that the law enforcer charged batons on them. However, no one was reported to be injured.Meanwhile, Awami League senior leader Suranjit Sengupta on Monday demanded of the government to arrange fresh MBBS and BDS admission tests due to alleged leakage of the question papers.”If the question papers of MBBS and BDS admission tests were leaked, the fresh admission test will have to be arranged,” he said while speaking at a discussion at Shilpakala Academy in city.He said as the Home Ministry arrested some persons in connection with question leakage, it was not wise to publish the result of the admission test before ending the investigation.”I’m surprised when the incident of question papers leakage took place how and in what way the Health Ministry held the admission test and published the result,” Suranjit said.He said when a minister like Mohammad Nasim is in charge of the Health Ministry, the nation cannot expect such incident from him.Bangladesh Nationalists Party on Sunday also demanded cancellation of the published results of MBBS and BDS admission tests as there are allegations of question-paper leakage.The party also extended its moral support to the movement of the admission seekers demanding retaking of the medical and dental tests over the alleged leak of questionsRapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Thursday arrested three persons, including Omar Siraj, an assistant director of the University Grants Commission (UGC) on charges of distribution of medical college admission test answer sheets and question papers of recruitment test for various departments of the government from the city’s UGC Building.The law enforcers also seized Tk 2 lakh cash, cheque for Tk 4 lakh, seals of various government offices, cheque books of different banks, three mobile phone sets and one iPad from their possessions.
