The High Court (HC) on Wednesday rejected a bail petition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia Charitable Trust case in which she was jailed for seven years.
The HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice S M Kuddus Zaman passed the order considering gravity of the offence mentioned in the case, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told the reporters.
The HC in its order said that the lower court convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to seven years’ imprisonment after the HC and the Appellate Divisions of the Supreme Court completed all phases of trial proceedings challenged by Khaleda Zia, the ACC lawyer added.
Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Advocate Zainul Abedin and Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan took part in the hearing on behalf of Khaleda Zia, while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan
appeared for Anti-Corruption Commission. In the petition, Khaleda said she has been suffering from many diseases including diabetes and dental problem.
She has already served two and a half years in jail in this case and therefore, she deserves bail in the case, Khaleda said in the petition.
A Dhaka court on October 29 last year convicted and sentenced Khaleda to seven years’ imprisonment in the case.
The BNP chief has been admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) since April 1 for treatment.
