HC grants bail to 70 BNP men

The High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to 70 BNP leaders and activists in a case filed following a clash between the party men and law enforcers at Dhaka’s Chandrima Udyan on August 17.
BNP’s Dhaka city north unit Convenor Amanullah Aman and its Member-Secretary Aminul Haque, Dhaka city south unit Convenor Abdus Salam and Member-Secretary Rafiqul Alam Majnu and Tabith Awal, among others, secured the bail.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan passed the order after holding hearing on several bail petitions filed
by the BNP leaders and activists. The court has granted them bail till September 26 and asked the accused persons to surrender in the Metropolitan Sessions Court in Dhaka within this period.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, advocate Mohammad Roqunuzzaman Suja, Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal and others appeared in the court on behalf of the petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General Razaul Karim represented the State.
Lawyer Roqunuzzaman Suja said a total of three cases were filed against 153 leaders and activists of BNP on August 18 this year with the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka over the clash of Chandrima Udyan.
Police have arrested 47 accused so far. Seventy accused out of remaining 106 have secured bail from the High Court.
BNP on August 2 this year formed its Dhaka city north and south units’ convening committee. And the members of the new units on August 17 went to the Chandrima Udday to place wreaths at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman.
BNP men and police clashed during this programme, leaving dozens of party leaders and activists as well as law enforcers injured. BNP and the police blamed each other for the clash during which some vehicles were also vandalised on nearby streets.
Later on August 18, police filed a case against 153 leaders and activists of BNP relating to the clash at Chandrima Udyan. Two more cases were also filed over the clash wherein some unknown persons were made accused.
