Court Correspondent :
The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday issued a rule asking the Government to explain in three weeks as to why they should not be directed to give adequate compensation to the mosquito-borne Chikungunya affected people.
The rule also asked the respondents to show cause as to why they should not be directed to take quick action for destroying and crushing the Aede mosquitoes and other mosquitoes spraying necessary medicine and cleaning the dumping spots of two Dhaka City Corporations and affected areas of the country. Besides, the rule asked the authorities to explain why they should not be directed to make arrangement for arranging awareness and preventive drives all over the country.
A High Court bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing on a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Sujauddowla Akand.
The writ petition was filed on July 4 with the High Court seeking directives on the government to take necessary steps for controlling Chikungunya in Dhaka city and other affected areas of the country.
The petition says that chikungunya disease broke out in an epidemic form in Dhaka north and south city corporations, Sylhet and Chittagong. The city corporation authorities and the health ministry have not taken any appropriate steps to control the disease.
