HC directs to form committee for Bengali translation of basic laws

To ensure the use of Bengali language in the judiciary, the High Court on Monday directed the government bodies concerned to form a committee to translate the basic laws, including penal code, code of civil and criminal procedure, statute of limitations, evidence law, specific remedies law, into from English to the Bengali language to make them suitable for reading.
The court directed the Law Ministry to form the committee comprising representatives of Bangla Academy, Law Commission, Faculty of Law and Bangla Department of the Dhaka University and Registrar General of the Supreme Court.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by 10 Supreme Court lawyers.
Lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir appeared in the court on behalf of the writ petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General Kazi Maynul Hassan represented the state. The court also issued a rule asking the government bodies to explain in four weeks as to why they should not be directed to translate the basic laws into authentic Bengali language as well as make them suitable for reading. Law Secretary, Director General of the Bangla Academy, Law Commission Chairman, Supreme Court Registrar General, Dean of the Law Faculty and Chairman of the Bangla Department of the Dhaka University, have been asked to comply with the rule.
