The High Court has confirmed the trial court’s death sentence for three men who in 2006 had raped a teenaged girl in Sylhet and then killed her in an attempt to cover up the crime.
A bench of justices Md Abdul Hye and Krishna Debnath threw out two of the paedophiles’ acquittal plea on Thursday and approved carrying out their sentences by hanging.
Of the convicts, Saad Ahmed and Ruhul Amin are behind bars while ‘Atik’ is on the run.
According to case details, the paedophiles took turns to violate the approximately 13-year old girl before killing her in Golapganj’s Nolua Haor on Nov 28, 2006.
She was buried anonymously by the Anjuman-e Mufidul Islam.
Golapganj police Sub-Inspector Tapas Kumar filed a case over incident.
Investigations later revealed identities of the victim and the rapists.
Convict Saad and Ruhul gave confessional statements before a court after their arrest in 2007.
Police pressed charges against the trio in Sylhet’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal the same year.
Later the case was shifted to Sylhet’s Speedy Trial Tribunal which sentenced them to death in 2009.
Two of the convicts sought acquittal when the case was put up at the High Court for approval to carry out the death sentence.
