Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Wednesday stayed the effectiveness of a government order that cancelled the declaration of the newspaper named ‘Sylheter Dak’, the largest circulating newspaper published from Sylhet.
The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Ragib Ali, the owner of the newspaper and also an
industrialist. Now there is no legal bar to publish the newspaper, said Advocate A M Amin Uddin, lawyer of the petitioner.
Ragib Ali is the President of the Editorials’ board of the newspaper. He was convicted in a criminal case. At this, the Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet cancelled the declaration of the newspaper on June 15 in 2017.
Ragib Ali filed a writ petition with the HC challenging the legality of the decision taken by the DC. After hearing the writ petition, the HC issued rule on July 17.
On August 29, Ragib Ali was granted bail from the HC in that criminal case. On October 24, the Appellate Division upheld the HC order on his bail. At this, Ragib Ali applied to the DC to recall the decision which cancelled the declaration of the newspaper. As he did not get any response from the DC, he filed a petition with the HC about this. After hearing the petition, the HC passed the order yesterday.
Advocate A M Amin Uddin took part in the hearing on behalf of the petitioner while Deputy Attornery General Amit Talukder stood for the State.
According to the sources, 33 years old ‘Sylher Dak’ is the largest circulating newspaper of Sylhet.
Sources said, Ragib Ali’s son Abdul Hye was the Editor of the newspaper. As Abdul Hye was sued in a case, another person became the Acting Editor.
Later, the publication of the newspaper continued keeping Ragib Ali’s name as the President of the Editorials’ board in the printing column to publish, though he was convicted in the criminal case. The declaration was cancelled after noticing them several times in this regard.
