HC asks govt not to harass 2 BNP leaders

The High Court on Sunday directed the authorities concerned not to harass or arrest BNP leaders Abdul Awal Mintoo and Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin in two cases filed against them.
An HC bench comprising Justice Mohammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Mohammad Badruzzaman passed the order when the two BNP leaders surrendered before the court seeking anticipatory bail.
The court also fixed December 30 for further hearing on the petitions and directed the attorney general’s office verbally not to harass or arrest the two BNP leaders until the next
hearing. On December 15, Masum Billah, president of Brahmanbaria district unit Chhatra League, filed a defamation case against BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, BNP Chairperson’s adviser Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, its joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi for calling Banga-bandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a ‘great Razakar’.
Brahmanbaria Senior Judicial Magistrate Court issued a warrant for their arrest in connection with the case later.
On December 24, a case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station against several leaders and activists of BNP and its youth and student wings in connection with a clash with Chhatra League men in Bakshibazar of the city.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo was among the accused.
President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Khandaker Mahbub Hossain stood for Nasir Uddin while Advocate Jainul Abedin for Mintoo.
