Street vendors on Thursday blocked Phoenix Road in front of the Nagar Bhaban demanding stoppage of eviction drives against them.
“We want to trade products in legal way. We have no market. As such, how could we survive, we do not know where to go? We are demanding stoppage of eviction drives from the pavements,” said Abul Hashem Kabir, President of Bangladesh Hawkers Union, during its sit-in programme around 12:00pm.
Afterward they withdrew the agitation
programme at around 12:30pm, submitting a memorandum to the city mayor.
“The hawkers have been passing hard days since January, 2019, after the city corporation and the police restarted eviction drives against the hawkers who used to trade on pavements across the city,” said the hawker leader.
A delegation of hawker leaders went to meet city mayor at Nagar Bhaban and handed him a memorandum.
DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon took the initiative to evict the street vendors from pavements of the capital in 2017.
The busy areas of Gulistan, Motijheel, Baitul Mukarram, Paltan and New Market were cleared of hawkers soon after. To keep the hawkers from coming back, volunteers were appointed.
