“Stop honking!” I said to one of the persons sitting in the car. On my way home from tuition classes, traffic was a usual thing and so was the honking.
As I was busy making space for myself in this traffic, I saw a man pulling a trolley loaded with things. It wasn’t difficult to figure out that the load was too much and he wasn’t able to pull it. But still he kept trying and there and then, taught me the lesson of perseverance, that no matter how difficult it seems you should never give up.
I was lost in my thoughts about how lazy I was and suddenly my eyes fell upon his feet, he wasn’t wearing any slippers or shoes and just a moment before I had seen pieces of glass scattered all over the road.
The thought of him getting hurt by one of the glass pieces moved me. I was so busy looking at his feet that I didn’t realize I was blocking the way for others.
Then I started following him. After a while, I couldn’t stop myself from asking him, “Hey! Don’t you have any slippers or shoes? You might get hurt!”
On hearing this, he smiled and said that the money he earned was so less that he could manage only one meal a day for his children and hence ignores the fact that his feet might get hurt! At that moment, I felt so helpless and all the times I had wasted money for my ‘meaningless’ cravings flashed in front my eyes!
All of a sudden, I remembered that my mother had given me pocket money today itself. I thought that I might not be able to solve all his problems for now, but I can certainly buy him a pair of slippers so that his feet don’t get hurt.
I told him to wait for a while and he agreed. I bought him flip-flops, the best I could manage to buy with my pocket money. And, when I gave him those, tears started to roll down his cheeks and he bent down to touch my feet, I moved away and didn’t let him.
The happiness I saw on his face brought tears to my eyes too. I felt so content and after reaching home, I opened my diary and wrote, “I did my bit!”
