Hasina, Xi to work for development

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed their firm resolve to work towards socio-economic advancement of the peoples of the two countries with Xi saying China-Bangladesh relationship is now at a new historical starting point.
They also agreed to expedite the process for establishing the BCIM economic corridor and increase communication and coordination on international and regional issues on shared interests.
In their statements following official talks between the two countries at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the two leaders termed the visit of the Chinese president as a ‘historic’ one to elevate the ‘closer compressive partnership of cooperation’ between the two nations to ‘strategic partnership for cooperstion’.
“It gives me great pleasure to visit the beautiful country of Bangladesh. China and Bangladesh are good neighbours, good friends and good partners,” said President Xi Jinping in his statement.
“I hope to use this visit to chart the course for future growth of China-Bangladesh relations from strategic and long term perspective together with the leaders of Bangladesh,” he added.
Xi said he had a very productive meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and reached agreements on a number of issues. He said the two countries agreed to elevate China-Bangladesh relationship from a closer comprehensive partnership of cooperation to strategic partnership of cooperation and to increase high level exchanges and strategic communications so that bilateral relations would continue to move ahead at a higher level. “We have agreed to form synergies between our respective development strategies, jointly advanced broadened road initiatives, launch joint feasibility study to strengthen trade and investment cooperation and strengthen practical cooperation in key areas such as infrastructure, production capacity, energy
and power transportation and smooth cooperation on big projects in Bangladesh to support its economic and social development,” Xi said.
The Chinese president said they also agreed to establish BCIM economic corridor and increase communication and coordination on international and regional issues on shared interests.
Xi said China-Bangladesh relationship is now at ‘a new historical starting point’ and heading toward a promising future. China is ready to work with Bangladesh to move along the path of development as friend and partner to trust and support each other.
“China-Bangladesh cooperation will deliver more fruits to our people and also contribute to peace, stability and development in the region,” he said.
He conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from the Chinese government and people to the people of Bangladesh. He also wished Bangladesh people constant success in realizing their dream for a ‘Sonar Bangla’.
Terming her bilateral talks with Chinese President as very fruitful, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said they had very successful discussions on bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest.
“We’ve reiterated our commitment to support the ‘One China Policy’. We’ve agreed to work closely and support each other on regional and international issues of mutual interest,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said, “We reached consensus on cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, infrastructure, industry, power, and energy, information and communication technology and agriculture.”
The Prime Minister said they witnessed signing of 27 agreements and MoUs of cooperation. These instruments cover, among others, such as trade, and investment, blue economy, BCIM-EC, roads, and bridges, railways, power, maritime, ICT, industrial production, capacity building and skill development.
She said, both the leaders also unveiled the plaques of six projects adding the signing of these instruments and the unveiling of these plaques created a platform for the two countries to cooperate at a higher plane.
“Today, we’ve elevated our ‘Closer Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation’ to a ‘Strategic Partnership for Cooperation’ and under this strategic partnership, we have agreed to work towards socio-economic advancement of the peoples of our two countries,” she added.
