The BNP on Thursday said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina could not bring a single bucket of water from India in last eight years though she always claims that they have very close friendship with the neighbouring country.
“This government is giving everything to the neighbouring India, but has failed to ink Teesta Water Distribution Treaty. They have been cheating with the people of the country for long,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the remark at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
He said the Prime Minister would go to India on Friday to attend the inaugural function of Bangladesh Bhaban in Shantiniketan of West Bengal province.
Rizvi said, “The government has been announcing for last eight years that they are going to ink Teesta deal with India, but there is no agenda to be discussed regarding the much awaited water agreement during the visit of Sheikh Hasina. Foreign Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali also failed to say anything about the long awaited Teesta water agreement at his news briefing in his office at ministry on Wednesday,” he said.
Rizvi also accused the government of picking up Chhatra Dal leader
Faysal Ahmed Sajal by law enforcers two days ago.
“Sajal’s family members and his political colleagues could not trace him for last two days. It is the culture of Awami police to pick up opposition party men frequently. We believe that the law enforcers picked him up. We demand his safe return to the family,” Rizvi said.
The BNP leader also condemned extrajudicial killings in the name of ‘gunfights’ in anti-drug drives.
“We are not against the drive but the drive should be transparent and legal. The human rights organizations said extrajudicial killings are also illegal as drug trades are,” he said.
BNP central leader Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Habibur Rahman Habib, ABM Mosharraf Hossain, Abdus Salam Azad, Mir Sarfat Ali Sapu, Munir Hossain and Belal Ahmed, among others, were also present.
