Harmful ingredients found in 24 energy drinks

The Department of Narcotics Control has found harmful ingredients in some 24 energy drinks after testing samples of 46 local and foreign items.
It also found 27 brands with fake monograms of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI).
Following a directive issued by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Home, the narcotics department conducted the operation.  
In its laboratory test, it found caffeine, opiate, siladenophila saitreda, viagra, sengrara and other
chemicals in the drinks. The Double Horse manufactured by GM Agro Food and Beverage, Zinsin Plas by Intra Pharmaceutical Limited, Mashroom and Jahan Mashroom by Jahan Food Products Limited, Zisnish Power by Satata Agro Food Beverage Ltd, Zinter by Agro Food and Beverage, Tanu Laila Fruits Syrup by Tanu Nutrition Food and Cosmetics Products Limited are, among others, containing harmful ingredients.
Professor ABM Abdullah, Dean of Medicine Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, said that sengrara and viagra could produce provocation in human body. Excessive drinking of beverage mixing with such chemicals may be sources of diabetic, sex, heart and kidney related diseases.
If any pregnant woman takes caffeine through beverage, she may deliver child before or after due date and her child may be deformed. The chemical may affect normal flow of blood and voice, he added.
According to a report prepared by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2012, sildenophila or vigra and senegrara are used for excitement in maturate person. But it is harmful for any one from one to 17 years.
An official of the Department of Narcotics Control said that any harmful chemical is forbidden in food item according to the Drug Control Act-1982.
DR Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Additional Secretary of the Home Ministry said that they directed the BSTI to take action against the law breakers.
