Harmful drugs being used to fatten cows in Barguna

To attract more buyers and have handsome prices, a section of farmers are using harmful drugs in cow fattening ahead of Eid-Ul-Azha in the district. According to district animal resources division and various non-government organizations, seasonal traders and farmers of the district are preparing their cows for selling before the Eid-ul-Azha.
The farmers, traders and some unscrupulous businessmen smuggle fattening tablets to Bangladesh through the India-Bangladesh border and those are easily available here. There are about 500 seasonal businessmen in the area who have fattened cows targeting the Eid-ul-Azha. The fattening process was started four to five months ago.
The Livestock Department officials have confirmed the matter saying some farmers are using illegal drugs to fatten their cows. Civil Surgeon of Barguna Dr. Anisur Rahaman, said, “As a result of applying these drugs cows grow in size literally, but the meat becomes toxic which is harmful for human body. The drugs can cause serious problems to kidney and liver of the human body, he added.
Dr. Altaf Hossain, an officer of district livestock department said, cow-fattening project is officially approved. But some people who are not real farmers carrying out this process.
