Handling fear

block
Life Desk :
Fear is a distressing negative sensation induced by a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger. Fear is apparently a universal emotion; all persons consciously or unconsciously face fear of some sort. It leads to an urge to confront it or flee from it (also known as the fight-or-flight response) but in extreme cases of fear (horror and terror) a freeze or paralysis response is possible.
However it must be noted that the only way to get rid of fear is to confront it head-on. If we run away from it or freeze during fearful situation, we are acknowledging that fear is more powerful than us.
As Emerson said, “Make a habit throughout your life of doing the things you fear. If you do the thing you fear, the death of fear is certain.”
World’s Top 10 fears
I was reading one of the surveys on the subject or fear, and it contained a list of top 10 things people fear in this world. The list appeared as follows:
Fear of Public Speaking
Fear of Death
Fear of Poverty
Fear of Failure
Fear of Rejection
Fear of Loneliness
Fear of Heights
Fear of Drowning
Fear of talking to people of opposite sex
Fear of the Dark
I checked a few other sources as well, and the top 10 fear list was more or less same everywhere.
You learned ‘what’ to fear
What I really find funny is that the list titled- ‘Top 10 things people fear in this world’ does not contain the basic two fears all human beings are born with. On the contrary it contains 10 fears that we develop during our formative and adult years.
We are only born with two fears; the fear of falling, and the fear of loud noises. All other fears we currently possess have developed from an event or events in our past which we associated with pain or danger. We have actually been programmed to avoid the event which we associated with the pain and danger.
Steps to handle your fear
Fear is nothing but imagination gone wrong. People rather than visualising positive outcomes begin to visualise negative outcomes and as a result feel afraid to act.
Acknowledge- Once you realise that fear is a learned emotion, you begin to unlearn it and deal with it. It is unnatural to be afraid of things.
References- Look for people who have already achieved what you are afraid to do. This will create a lot of positive references in your mind.
Action- The fastest and the most effective way to conquer fear is to take action.
There is something therapeutic about taking action. It kills worry and fear at the same time.
Keep taking action till the time you feel comfortable in handling what you were once afraid of.
Real freedom is experienced only once you conquer your fears. Step outside your comfort zone and experience the magic by realising your potential.
