Half of college seats to remain vacant

Almost half of the seats in the Higher Secondary educational institutions in the country will remain vacant this year.
A total of 15,74,104 students passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and its equivalent examinations but the number of seats is 28,76, 299 all over the country.
The number of colleges and madrasas under 10 education boards is 7,319.
Education Ministry sources said, there is no seat crisis in higher secondary educational institutions.
Some officials of the ministry admitted that although there are sufficient seats in the higher secondary level, the standard and quality educational institutions are rare.
An official wishing anonymity told The New Nation, “It is indeed that seats are available. But how many colleges and madrasas are actually standard.
Kamrul Hasan, a guardian, said, “My son has passed the SSC examination this year. I have applied at five college in Dhaka but I am in doubt about the admission of my son.”
“The government is advertising that there is no seat crisis in higher secondary level institutions. But actually there is tremendous seat crisis at reputed and standard educational institutions,” he said.
Another guardian Salma Begum said, her daughter has applied for Viqarunnisa Noon School and College and City College for admission. But it is uncertain. Its depend on luck.
“My daughter passed from a rural school in Norail district. I would like to admit her in a reputed college in Dhaka for better education and result. It is impossible to attain good result from the institution of the rural areas as the rural areas’ institutions are being run by the sub-standard teachers and poor facilities,” she said.
A total of 110,629 students achieved the highest GPA-5 this year. Of them, 55,701 boys got GPA-5, while 54,928 girls obtained the GPA-5 under the 10 education boards.
But the seat at reputed and standard colleges across the country is about 60,000.
Examination Controller of Dhaka Education Board Professor Harun-or-Rashid said, there are 987 colleges having 4,66,887 seats under Dhaka Education Board. The students crowed at reputed colleges every year. Some seats always remain empty at each academic session. And the scenario of the rural areas’ institutions is not good. They are suffering from students’ crisis.
