Halda River affected with cancer: Fazle Karim

Only natural fish breeding centre in country

Chairman on the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railway Ministry ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury MP said, the South Asian famous natural fish breeding centre -Halda River only in the country is now guardianless and suffering from cancer with multi dimensional problems.
He said a cancer patient looks every moment for death and like that death of Halda River is sighting gradually.
.He disclosed it while addressing the views exchanging meeting on’ Partnership for Conservation of Halda River Ecosystem’ at Hotel Radison Blue Hall in city on Monday as Chief Guest.
 Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Md. Ruhul Amin presided over it. Director General of Prime Minister’s office Md. Kabir Bin Anowar, UNDP Country Director Mr. Sudipta Mukharjee , Deputy Commissioner Md. Shamsul Arefin and the President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce Mahbubul Alam graced the meeting as special guests.
Associate Professor of Marine Biology of Ctg University Prof.Dr. Manzurul Kibria presented the kynote paper on the meet. Director of Marine fisheries deptt of Ctg. Nasiruddin Md Humayun, Director of Environment Deptt , chittagong Masud Karim are the panel discussants. Programme Specialist of UNDP Arif M Faisal delivered the address of welcome it , sources said.
 The chief guest on the occasion, ABM Fazle Karim chowdhury categorically discussed the prevailing problems of the Halda river and said the sustainable decision should be taken on priority basis to save the south asian famous fish breeding field . He also suggests to formulate specific laws regarding survival of Halda immediately otherwise this natural marine resources will be ruined forever.
The lawmaker expressed resentment over the govt sanction of only one lakh taka for Halda during releasing spawn of fishes but it expends about Tk.2 crores for study on river.
The lawmaker further said there a number of big rivers in the country but Halda is a special nature of river where fish spawn, fries of carp fishes are naturally available and this river should be protected from any types of pollution on national interests.
