Some hajj agencies in the country have indulged into gross irregularities in the name of sending people to the yearly hajj pilgrimage.
Some of the irregularities were unearthed during a drive conducted in the city on Sunday by a team of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The team conducted a drive in eight travel agencies located at G-Net Tower in Fakirapool. The ACC team found that Khanjahan Ali Hajj Tours and Travels are sending the pilgrims in name of Al-Madina travels though the agencies are blacklisted by the government.
Apart from this, Jamalpur Tours and Travels have given the responsibility of sending their passengers to Minar Travels as they don’t have adequate number of pilgrims in hand.
ACC found evidence of big irregularities in King Air International. The Hajj Agent which has license is sending pilgrims to another agency Nilasagar Travel, which doesn’t have a license.
In addition, ACC team examined the list of licensees and hajj pilgrims by conducting operations in Air Confidence, Nitline Hazari Haj Tour and KB Air International Haj Agency.
They also talked to hajj passengers and wanted to know about their inconvenience and instruct all the agencies to provide pilgrim services without any harassment.
Regarding the operation, the Director General of Enforcement Operations Mohammad Munir Chowdhury said, “The operation will be continued to stop corruption or fraud, and strict action will be taken if there is evidence of corruption.”
A 9-member ACC team, led by an ACC deputy director Mahmud Hasan, conducted the drive as part of a continued operation against graft practices in the name of sending people to hajj.
ACC also conducted such drives earlier on July 2, 4 and 9 in some of the hajj agencies in the Purana Paltan, Nayapaltan and Fakirapool areas respectively.
