Guneafowl farming prospect bright in Rajshahi

Poultry bird experts at a press conference here yesterday unanimously mentioned that there is a bright prospect of guneafowl farming in the region through the best of its existing natural resources.
Giving its salient feature they viewed large scale farming of the bird can be the effective means of freeing the society from protein deficiency besides poverty. Its egg is cholesterol-free and meat is tastier than other poultry birds.
Department of Poultry Science in Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh and its Greater Rajshahi Association organized the press conference at SK Food World Restaurant in the city. Bangladesh Livestock Society (BLS) supported the event.
Prof Dr Subhas Chandra Das from the poultry science department addressed the press conference as focal person detailing aspects of the bird. BLS President Prof Dr Jalal Uddin Sarder and its general secretary Dr Hemayetul Islam and Additional District Livestock Officer Dr Jukfikar Md Akhter Hossain also spoke on the occasion.
Prof Dr Shubas Das said guinea fowls are promising because of their high performance in egg and meat production and fitness to protect the common poultry diseases.
A guineafowl can give around 100-120 eggs per year whereas the native bird lay hardly 50-60 eggs. He termed guinea fowl farming more profitable and cost-effective and suggested the farmers to use modern technologies during farming of those commercially.
A sustainable farming of the birds can be the vital means of poverty reduction with ensuring the supply of safe and quality poultry meat and eggs, he added.
Referring to various research findings, he also said the meat of guinea birds contain very low-fat, so it is good for health.
“We have taken initiatives to make the local Meherchandi village as a model of guineafowl farming,” Prof Das said adding that each of the enlisted 45 female farmers was given 20 chicks and other requisite support there free of cost.
