UNB, Dhaka :

A 2nd-year student of Criminology department of Dhaka University was allegedly tortured, both physically and mentally by some 3rd year students at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hall early Friday.

The victim Abu Talib, who is a resident of the same hall, said he was made to smoke a cigarette in one go – without once removing it from between his lips.

When he refused to do so, the accused 3rd year students beat him with a stump, forced another cigarette between his lips and made him smoke it, the victim said in a press conference held at the DUJA office around 6.30pm.

Accusing Sheikh Shanto Alam of Social Welfare Institute, Imdadul Haque Bandhan of Islamic History and Culture Department, Shahabuddin Islam Vijay of Information Science and Library Management Department and Nahidul Islam Fagun of Law Department for torturing him mentally and physically, he said that these are the men who torture and abuse students in the guestroom.

“Almost every time we, 2nd year students of Bangabandhu hall, have such issues but no one dares to speak out, fearing they may get kicked out of the hall, or being tortured,” he said.

The victim wanted to leave the hall due to this rampant guestroom culture. His torturers even had the audacity to call him in the morning today and act as if nothing that he could recall happened. As if that would convince him that actually nothing happened, Abu Taleb recounted incredulouslyt, hardly able to fathom their warped thinking.

“However, this morning, Shanto and Badhan called me to convince me that nothing happened to me and there was no guest room yesterday,” he said.

Bangabandhu Hall provost Prof. Akram Hossen could not be contacted to get his statement in this regard.
