Growers worried as fungal infection affects jackfruit trees in Jhenaidah

The growers in Jhenaidah have became worried when the fungal infections have affected the jackfruit trees . The disease has been damaging the fruits on the standing trees , the growers said, while the agriculture department officials saying that there was no reason to be worried as it could be managed with fungicides.’
Some orchard owners of Nijputia village under Jhenaidah Sadar upazila said, huge size spots has been developing on the bodies of the jackfruits which has been rotting the fruits. The once smaller spots are developed and turns to fatal ones. Each and every fruits of the affected plants are rotten faster.
Some of the farmers said, they have applied fungicides when they witnessed the infestations on the fruits, which could not check the infestations, they said.
Upazila Agriculture Extension Department Officer of Jhenaidah Sadar Dr. Khan Mohammad Manirizzaman when contacted said, there was no reason to be worried as the infection was due to fungal attack.
The attack could be controlled if the orchard owners apply anti-fungal during the immature stage of the jackfruits. Further, the rotten could be controlled applying Opiconazol group of medicines on the affected plats.
The DAE official said, most of the farmers, specially, the orchard garden owners in the area are not enough aware on the orchard management as the fruits in the area are not produced in commercials basis on vast tracts of land like other surrounding districts.
Ignorance of the plant owners was mainly liable as they do not inform the matter to local DAE people in time which could reduce the attack of pests and diseases immediately.
Moreover, the DAE has been providing training to the orchard owners on plant management so that they could save the plants from any attack of pests and diseases. The farmers through farmers’ field days (FFDs) and training, the UAO said.
