Growers expect good yield of potato in Rangpur

Potato plants have grown well in all the districts under Rangpur Agriculture Zone, making the growers hopeful of attaining a good yield of the crop during the current season.
Farmers of five districts under the zone cultivated potato on around 50,160 hectares of land this season against the DAE’s target of 49,921 hectares official sources of DAE said. The districts are Rangpur, Nilphamari,Kurigram,Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat.
During a recent visit to several areas in the region this correspondent found the farmers busy nurturing the transplanted potato fields. The plants are getting almost matured at different areas of the region.
Mofa Mia (45), a farmer of Shabajpur village in Rangpur Sadar Upazila in Rangpur said he has cultivated potato on two acres of land this year and is optimistic of achieving an excellent yield of the crop, if the weather remains favorable.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) S. M Asraf Ali said cultivation of potato, a popular crop is increasing in the region due to its huge demand both at home and abroad.
Adequate initiatives have been taken to ensure the supply of quality seeds, fertilizers and other agri-inputs to the farmers in order to enhance its production, sources added.
