Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday urged teachers to pay special attention to their students so that they become good human beings and stay away from drug addiction and terrorist acts.
The Prime Minister said this while inaugurating the National Primary Education Week 2016 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
Sheikh Hasina renewed her hope that Bangladesh will be freed from illiteracy soon, and attain hundred percent literacy rate. “The country’s literacy rate is now 71 percent due to the various steps of our government. Insha Allah, Bangladesh will soon be freed from illiteracy,” she said.
The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education organised the programme with its Minister Mostafizur Rahman in the chair. The Prime Minister handed over the National Primary Education Medal-2015 to 19 selected recipients as well as distributed awards of the Inter-Primary School Cultural Competition-2015 in seven categories and Inter-Primary Sports Competition-2015 in seven categories among the recipients.
She also enjoyed a cultural programme organised on the occasion.
Hasina called upon the teachers to take good care of all students so that they could become good human beings and citizens imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War and patriotism, and could know the real war history and move ahead with ideals on the right paths.
“We don’t want the children and students to get derailed and go to the wrong path like getting addicted to drug or militant act,” she added. Hasina went on saying, “Islam is a religion of peace and it doesn’t accept suicide…terrorist and militant acts in the name of Islam is not at all acceptable to anyone. So, you’ll have to remain aware so that our children stay
away from such misdeeds, and no one could confuse them.”
The Prime Minister also suggested giving them such lessons at every school, college, mosque and madrasah so that no one could get involved in such destructive acts. “Those who’ll run this country in the coming days are children, and they’re the country’s future. So, the teachers should guide the students in such a way so that the children are properly educated and their characters are properly built.”
She called upon all, including school committees, guardians and the well off section of society to form funds and donate those to run midday meals or tiffin in schools at their respective areas.
Highlighting various successes and achievements of her government in the education sector, Hasina said the Awami League government had distributed some 193 crore free textbooks up to secondary level over the last seven years while some 10,87,19,997 books at primary level this year. She said computer education will be made mandatory in the future at primary level.
She also mentioned the formulation of the country’s first modern education policy in 2010, formulation of the PM’s Education Assistance Trust Fund worth Tk 1,000 crore, raising the number of countrywide stipend recipients to 1.30 crore, ongoing various steps to raise the enrollment at primary education to cent percent and reducing further the dropout rate from the present 20.4 percent.
The Prime Minister said formation of Students Council in each school began in 2010 while ‘Leadership Training Center’ is being built in Cox’s Bazar for their training. Hasina said the number of female students in the education sector is now rising compared to their male counterparts.
She said her government nationalized some 26,193 primary schools in 2013 alongside announcing to nationalise the jobs of some 1,03,845 teachers. The jobs of some 1,08,200 teachers have been nationalized, which is 5,000 higher than the announced posts, Hasina added.
