Crime incident on rise in Port City

The incidents of snatching and looting money by the miscreants increased alarmingly in the port city in the holy month of Ramadan. At least 40 t0 50 incidents of snatching are taking place in the city area every day. But, almost 90 percent of the victims do not file case with the thana to avoid harassment of police and sufferings of court, said the sources concerned.
In the meantime, Shirin Akhter who came to Chittagong from Potia upazila for Eid shopping on June 12 and became victim of an attack by armed snatcher at Teribazar area on that day, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital Monday night after fighting with death for long seven days. Death of Shirin Akhter created dissatisfaction among the people over the activities of the law enforcers in Chittagong.
The law enforcing agencies including Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have taken special measures to control the law and order situation particularly curbing incidents of snatching, looting and extortion in port city during the holy month of Ramadan. In the mean time, police arrested six snatchers when they were allegedly preparing to commit snatching at Postarpar Asma Khatun City Corporation School area in the port city on Sunday night.
On the other hand, CMP has identified 111 vulnerable spots for snatching in the city. According to the sources in CMP, there are 111 vulnerable spots for snatching in the city. Of these, Chittagong New Market area, Agrabad, Singapore Market area, Badshah Meah Road area, Art College Area, Chittagong College Road, Momin Road area, Jamal Khan Road, Anderkillah, Chaktai, Muradpur, Bohadderhat, Khurshid Mohol area, Lal Dighi area, WASA point, Barik Building point, GEC point, Chawkbazar area, Kadamtoli area, Nasimon Bhaban area most vulnerable spots for snatching in the city. Iqbal Bahar, Commissioner of CMP said, the law enforcing agonies particularly police has taken special measures to control the law and order situation during holy month of Ramadan. “We set up check posts and deployed huge number of policemen at the important spots and the gates of markets. As a result, the buyers can be safer than previous years.”
Following the directive of high ups of the government, the CMP deployed special 60 teams for controlling security. Besides, several mobile teams are patrolling the city as well as vulnerable areas of district in this regard.
Meanwhile, CMP and district police sets up check posts in the important spots and intersections in the city. Police men are checking the three wheeler autos, private cars and micro buses in those spots.
On the other hand, CMP called upon the city dwellers to inform about the terrorists and criminals to the police. RAB-7 has conducted special raids to nab the criminals and militants fearing the anarchy of miscreants, the RAB sources said.
