Once the power-hungry greater Chattogram has now become self-reliant in electricity with the resumption of gas-fired power units recently.
Talking to journalists , Prabir Kumar Sen, Chief Engineer of the Distribution of Southern Zone of Power Development Board (PDB), said that there was no more load shedding in the greater Chattogram.
“We are now getting nearly 1100 MW of power regularly to meet the actual demand of the region,” he said.
The generating units of PDB are supplying a total of 600 MW and nearly 500 MW of power from eight private generating units daily.
Of them, 200 MW is available from Kaptai Hydel Station, 200 MW from Hathazari and Dohazari plant run by furnace oil. Since, August 20 last, 210 MW more power has been added to the distribution network of PDB with the resumption of generation in 225 combined cycle unit of Shikalbaha.
The Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) resumed the supply of LNG to the 225 combined cycle unit of PDB in Shikalbaha on August 20 last. It is the first unit of PDB to resume generation after a long time.
It may be mentioned that all gas-fired units of Power Development Board (PDB) in Chattogram have remained suspended over the last few years due to acute shortage of gas.
Generation in two units of Raozan with the capacity of 410 MW have remained suspended for a few years.
PDB sources said they have six gas-fired units in Chattogram with the generation capacity of 686 MW. These units are: three units at Shikalbaha including one 60 MW and two barge-mounted power plants having the capacity of 52 Megawatt, one 150 MW peaking power station in Shikalbaha and two units of 420-Megawatt capacity at Raojan.
These units need 162 mmcft of gas. Two units of Raozan Power Station need 90 mmcft of gas and 60 MW Shikalbaha Power Station needs 22 mmcft of gas and two barge mounted stations at Shikalbaha need 20 mmcft of gas and 150 MW Peaking Power Plant in Shikalbaha needs 30 mmcft of gas.
Against the total demand for 162 mmcft of gas, the Karnaphuli gas company has stopped supply of gas to all power plants in Chattogram due to acute shortage of gas for a long time.
Chief Engineer of PDB, Prabir Kumar Sen said 30 mmcft of gas has been supplied to the 225 Shikalbaha unit on August 20. With the gas, the combined unit went into generation on August 20, he added.
Prabir also hoped that 45 more mmcft of gas would be supplied to the one unit of Raozan on September 15 next. “If the Raozan unit-1 goes into generation, PDB will get additional 200 MW by the middle of September,’ Prabir said.
He claimed that the supply of power from the national grid for Chattogram would require no more.
Prabir Sen further said the second unit of Raozan Power Station would resume very soon with the supply of more gas to PDB. Then the additional generation of power would be supplied to the national grid.
