The BNP-led 20-party alliance is likely to announce its next course of action soon to realize its demand for a fresh general election under a non-party government system.
Party insiders said, the street movement would be launched from this month, targeting February next for realising the demand.
As part of the strategy, the alliance is planning to hold grand rally in the capital city in September, while it is also planning to hold a number of rallies in some other district headquarters, especially on the outskirts of Dhaka, to drum up public support in favour of their demand, and to inspire the leaders and workers to forge a tougher movement in phases. If the government obstructs such programme, the 20-party alliance will call hartal, said the alliance leaders.
The BNP high-command believe that they have to strengthen the anti-government movement in the capital city, as their movement prior to the January-5 election failed, as the BNP-led alliance did not gain enough momentum in the capital.
BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy said that the people across the country boycotted the Januray-5 election, responding to the call of the BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. But the movement did not succeed finally due to poor role in the capital city. In this point, a standing committee member of the party said that they are now keeping the capital city in their main focus for a successful anti-government movement.
The party another joint secretary general Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon said that they would wage a tougher street movement which will ultimately would compel the government to arrange a fresh election by February next. “The government will have no alternative way to hold fresh election by February,” he said.
Another joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed said that the movement programme would be decided soon to force the government to realize their demand immediately for holding a fresh general election under a neutral government. The BNP-led alliance will hold a meeting soon to finalise the programme, he said.
It was known that Khaleda Zia would call a meeting of the party’s standing committee, the highest policy-making body of the party, soon to discuss the strategy and finalise the movement plan. After the meetings of the alliance and the standing committee, the street programmes will be announced formally through a press conference.
