BNP on Tuesday termed baseless and unrealistic the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ (BBS’) projection that the country is going to achieve 7.05 percent GDP (gross domestic product) growth rate for the first time.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also urged people not to get confused with the government’s ‘amiable statistics’.
“BBS presented a provisional estimate on the national income and GDP growth in 2015-16 FY claiming the GDP will grow to 7.05 percent for the first time. This claim is not substantiated. It’s unrealistic and unfounded,” he said. He further said, “It’s nothing but a statistical surprise of the government. As part of its evil plan to hang onto power, we think, the government is making people puzzled with false statistics. We ask people not to get confused with such amiable statistics as you know it very well how you are.”
The BNP leader said the country’s economic indicators suggest that it is not possible to reach the 7.05 percent GDP growth in the fiscal ending in June next. He said it is also not the right claim of the government that Bangladesh is heading towards achieving 7 percent GDP growth for the first time as the BNP-led alliance government had hit it 7.06 percent in 2005-2006 FY. On April 5 last, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said Bangladesh is set to overcome its six percent GDP growth ‘trap’ the end of the current fiscal year as per a provisional estimate. “This is a matter of pride for the whole nation as we’re going to achieve 7.05 percent GDP growth rate for the first time,” he said while briefing reporters after a meeting of National Economic Council (NEC) held with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Apart from the excellent growth, he said the per capita income is also going to rise to $ 1466 from the previous $ 1316 in the current year. Fakhrul said the BBS hurriedly made its estimate on the GDP growth this year at the behest of the government. “The country’s indicators of macro economy are not that much encouraging.”
He also observed that the GDP growth projection increased as the salaries of government service holders have almost been doubled this year. “But it’s a one-time rise. It can be said the true public welfare only by creasing salaries and its related expenses. The positions of most economic indicators that influence the GDP growth are not satisfactory.”
