Govt working to bring discipline in broadcast media: Minister

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday said the government is working relentlessly to bring back discipline in the country’s broadcast media.
“We have already taken initiatives in the better interest of mass media . . . these initiatives put media in order mostly,” he told newsmen at the meeting room of his secretariat office here.
Later, the minister held a meeting with the leaders of Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO).
Dr Hasan said airing local advertisements in foreign television channels has been reduced significantly as the airing of own advertisements by the cable operators has been stopped.
The minister said some discipline has been established in the broadcast sector. “Now we are working to establish full discipline in this sector with the cooperation of all,” Dr Hasan, also Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary, said.
Thanking country’s mass media including electronic and newspapers to stop rumours in recent time, the minister said the media of the country played a vital role against the rumours as well as in preventing dengue.
Information Secretary Abdul Malek, BTV Director General Harun-or-Rashid, private TV channel DBC Chairman Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Ekattor TV Chief Executive Officer Mozammel Haque Babu and private TV owners, among others, were present.
