The BNP on Friday alleged that the government wants to cling to power by conducting January 5 of 2014 like election again.
“The government is trying to restore one-party rule in the country by keeping opposition parties out of the next general election race. It wants to retain power by holding a lopsided election like the January 5 of 2014 keeping all the opposition parties
out of the election race,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He said this to journalists after placing wreaths at the grave of late President Ziaur Rahman along with leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal marking its 40th founding anniversary.
“They kept BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in jail with a false case, though she has wide contribution to democracy in the country. Their aim is clear, that is to hold one-sided polls again,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader said the people of Bangladesh will not accept any unilateral polls, and they will make their movement for restoration of democracy, and their voting and other rights a success through united movement.
“The government is arresting not only BNP leaders and activists, but also those who speak in favour of democracy. They are filing false cases against pro-democratic people and sending them to jail,” he said.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “The current Election Commission is playing a subservient role. So, the next general election is not possible to hold in a fair and neutral manner under this commission.”
The BNP leader also said that they are now taking efforts to make the party’s reformist leaders active to further strengthen the party. The reformist leaders had worked against the party during the 1/11 government in 2007.
BNP Joint-Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Juba Dal Senior Vice-President Mortazul Karim Badru and Acting General Secretary Nurul Islam Nayon, among others, were present.
