Leaders of a number of civil society organizations urged the government to be vocal on climate migrant issues in the coming UN High-Level Meeting on “Refugees and Migrants” slated for September 19 next in New York.
At a press conference held at the Jatiya Press Club in the city yesterday they urged the government to proceed with an international negotiation strategies focusing the climate induced migrant issue in the meeting likely to be attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The government is needed to rethink and have plans to integrate all ministries with a common focus on climate induced displacement and their management, leaders said.
They proposed to form a “National Climate Commission” and give responsibility to the commission for integration of climate adaptation in budget and national planning and lead the climate negotiation at international level.
Climate induced displacement and migrant issue is common and national problem and that’s why it must have to be focused nationally rather than a ministry-specific responsibility, said Syed Aminul Hoque in his written statement.
Mostafa Kamal Akand, networking coordinator of EquityBD, Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, president of Forum of Environment Journalist, Bangladesh (FEJB), Kawser Rhaman of Bangladesh Climate Change Journalist Forum (BCJF), Aminur Rasul Babul of Unnayan Dhara Trust and Waliur Rahaman from WARBE Development Foundation were present.
